Education - Nursing

St Vincent’s Hospital promotes a supportive teaching and learning environment for its nursing staff.

The Division of Nursing offers a range of different educational programs and courses for nurses at different stages of their professional career.

Transitional Support Program
This is a planned and structured program of orientation and experience, providing participants with the opportunity to further develop the skills, knowledge and abilities required in the role of a registered nurse.

Postgraduate Courses
This structured clinical program which runs parallel with tertiary study associated with a range of postgraduate specialist nursing courses offered by various universities is well established.

St Vincent's Hospital offers a scholarship to registered nurses undertaking a postgraduate specialist clinical nursing course (conditions apply). Other scholarships are available through various organisations, such as the NSW Department of Health.

Inservice Education Programs
St Vincent’s Hospital provides opportunities for professional and skills development via inservice education programs. Some examples of these include wound management, patient controlled analgesia, intravenous cannulation, preceptor and research workshops.

In addition, nurses are encouraged to pursue various educational opportunities to expand and develop their clinical expertise. Introductory level programs are offered in a variety of clinical specialities to enhance skills and knowledge development. Some examples of these programs include emergency and trauma, intensive therapy, HIV and infectious diseases, neurological and orthopaedic nursing.

Reconnect Program
This is a 13-week structured program for registered and enrolled nurses wishing to re-enter the nursing workforce.

Nursing Research Unit
St Vincent's Hospital encourages and supports clinical nursing research through workshops and consultation. Secondment to the Campus Nursing Research Unit is an additional feature of our unique range of clinical support strategies.
