A message from
Adjunct Professor, ACU
Director of Nursing and Patient Care
The nursing team at St Vincent’s strives to provide a safe, happy and supportive environment for our staff, with a focus on providing the best possible care for our patients. We embrace working with our multidisciplinary health care peers. A culture of professionalism, ongoing learning, career development and patient focus is seen as essential to achieving our goals and meeting our Mission.
In order to provide the highest quality patient care, our Nursing Division at St Vincent’s Hospital employs over 850 nurses in a variety of clinical settings. We are considered one of Australia’s leading, teaching, research and acute care providers and are proud to hold this position.
Our Hospital is organised around 6 clinical management Programs and 2 Service units that are able to provide our nurses with a variety of clinical experiences at tertiary and quaternary level. As well as in our clinical specialty areas and services, a number of our nurses work in other clinical settings including diagnostic and treatment laboratories and research centres.
St Vincent's offers the full range of professional nurse roles including Clinical Nurse Consultants, Clinical Nurse Educators, Care Coordinators, Registered Nurses, Enrolled Nurses, Trainee Enrolled Nurses and Assistants in Nursing. All these roles collaborate to support best clinical practice and provide professional development opportunities. We also employ undergraduate nurses which is an excellent way to supplement undergraduate training. Each of our clinical settings has comprehensive orientation and ongoing education programs.
Leadership and support for the Division of Nursing is provided by our Nursing Leadership Team. Our nurses are also supported by the Nurse Learning Support Service and Nursing Workforce and Resource Unit. We pride ourselves on staff development opportunities.
Our primary tertiary sector relationships for undergraduate nurses are with the Australian Catholic University (ACU), The University of Notre Dame Australia (Sydney campus) (UNDA), The University of Tasmania and the University of Technology. We also work closely with ACU for post graduate students.
This year we have seen the enhancement of nursing research with the commencement of Professor Sandy Middleton in the St Vincents & Mater Health Sydney Nursing Research Unit in collaboration with ACU and we are currently working towards a Professor of Palliative Care Nursing with UNDA.
