St Vincent’s Hospital is a teaching hospital of the University of New South Wales and has academic associations with the Australian Catholic University, University of Sydney, University of Technology, Sydney, University of Tasmania and University of Notre Dame Australia. The Hospital is closely affiliated with the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute and the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, which are also housed on the St Vincent’s Campus.

Research is part of St Vincent's Hospital’s ongoing commitment to improving medical procedures. Researchers from the cardiothoracic team are involved in a wide variety of projects, including clinical trials and research into improved medications, ways to reduce inflammation during cardiopulmonary bypass, and ongoing patient follow-up.
