The Order of Malta
In late 2005 the NSW branch of the Order of Malta adopted Gorman House as a charitable works project. At this time Gorman House only had funding capacity to operate a 5-day-a-week service.

With detoxification treatment requiring an average of 4-5 days the restriction of admission days to Mondays and Tuesdays severely impacted on the number of people admitted to the facility.

Through the support of the Order of Malta, Gorman House reopened a 7-day service in October 2006, enabling the public health and safety needs of some of Sydney’s most needy and marginalised people to be better coordinated and managed. Since then, new alcohol and drug workers have been employed at Gorman House to work with the larger numbers of residents admitted under the 7 day-a-week operations.

A Clinical Support worker has been appointed to oversee and co-ordinate staff training and development, and a number of new treatment programs have been piloted.

Not stopping at their efforts in inspiring individuals and businesses to get behind Gorman House and re-establish a 7 day-a-week service, the Order of Malta have been the driving force in a number of refurbishments at Gorman House.

Generously giving their time and sourcing donated items and services, the members of the NSW branch of the Order have dramatically improved the facilities, benefiting both our residents and our staff.

The landscaping of the garden/patio area is greatly appreciated by the residents, creating an outdoor space for them to relax and read and providing the venue for our weekend BBQs. The Knights have also worked towards refurbishing the bathrooms and providing new lounges, fridges and clothes dryer.

The Order with St Vincent’s Hospital is committed to raising $200,000 per year. This represents half the amount required to ensure that Gorman House stays open seven days a week, every week of the year, allowing it to treat an extra 1,200 of Sydney’s most marginalised and sick every year.
