Self Help Groups

Self-help groups for drug and alcohol dependence are made up of people who have been directly affected by drugs and alcohol use, who then help each other to become or stay drug free. These groups are usually run by members rather than professionals but may have some professional backing.

The 12 Step groups like AA and NA are long established and have helped many people achieve their goals of lifestyle change.

SMART Recovery
In Australia we have introduced a system of self help groups called SMART Recovery. Developed in the US over 13 years ago, these groups are now established in NSW and slowly filtering into other States. Based on Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) the topics covered and the way the information and guidance is structured in the group sessions, prove particularly useful and directly helpful. There are many scientific studies that have been published and are available to verify that this process is effective in helping people work through their issues and achieve the lifestyle balance they want.

Some self-help groups for any drug and alcohol dependence include:
SMART Recovery
Narcotics Anonymous- NA
Alcoholics Anonymous – AA
