Course Overview This program aims to assist the Perioperative Nurse in the development of knowledge and skills related to laparoscopic surgery.  It will provide a sound base from which the Perioperative Nurse can further develop their knowledge, skills and confidence in the circulating and instrument role for laparoscopic surgery.
Key Topics

This program consists of lectures in the morning and workstations in the afternoon, during which we will:

  • Discuss the role of the perioperative nurse in laparoscopic surgery;
  • Identify and discuss risks to the patient during laparoscopic surgery and implement nursing practice to reduce and manage these risks;
  • Demonstrate and discuss rationale for setting up of theatre for laparoscopic surgery
  • Identify and describe the components of the tower for laparoscopic surgery;
  • Discuss physiology of pneumoperiotoneum and nursing management of the patient with pneumoperitoneum;
  • Discuss and integrate the principles of anatomy and physiology into perioperative practice;
  • Identify and describe instrumentation used in laparoscopic surgery;
  • Demonstrate safe handling and trouble shooting skills with laparoscopic instrumentation and equipment

Parking There is parking available in the hospital car park at cost of $26 per day.  Public transport to the hospital is via train to Kings Cross Station or by bus from Elizabeth Street in the city (389 or 380).
