Course Overview

This informative and thought-provoking workshop combines didactic presentations, small group work, simulated practice observations and discussion. At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • discuss the relevant responsibilities and practice boundaries for nurses in perioperative and procedural settings;
  • access policy & other electronic resources that facilitate and guide safe practice;
  • identify human-factors and error-prone work practices that have contributed to medication errors;
  • implement strategies to minimise the risk of medication error; and
  • demonstrate safe practice for handling, preparation and labelling medications.

Workshops cater for groups of 6 to 18 participants.

Who should attend? This workshop is designed for RNs and ENs at all levels of experience, working in a range of perioperative settings (eg operating suite (anaesthetics, scrub/scout, recovery), day surgery procedural rooms, endoscopy, cardiac catheter labs, interventional radiology and anywhere else that nurses prepare medications on behalf of medical officers.
Prerequisites for attending
  • Current  employment in perioperative and/or procedural settings.
  • Recent review of all pre-reading (download pre-reading).
  • Participants must bring a hard copy of the allocated HCCC case study to the workshop for the group work.
