Safe Handling of Intraoperative Medications

Venue	Anaesthetic Seminar Room, Aikenhead Level 4 St Vincent's Hospital Victoria St, Darlinghurst (Note: Alternative venue for workshops on 1st Oct and 3rd Dec: Conference Room 2, Xavier Level 4) There is parking available in the hospital car park at cost of $28 per day. Public transport to the hospital is via train to Kings Cross Station or by bus from Elizabeth Street in the city (389 or 380). See Directions page on this website.

Course Overview	This informative and thought-provoking workshop combines didactic presentations, small group work, simulated practice observations and discussion. At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to: discuss the relevant responsibilities and practice boundaries for nurses in perioperative and procedural settings; access policy & other electronic resources that facilitate and guide safe practice; identify human-factors and error-prone work practices that have contributed to medication errors; implement strategies to minimise the risk of medication error; and demonstrate safe practice for handling, preparation and labelling medications. Workshops cater for groups of 6 to 18 participants.
Key Topics	Overview of legislation and National recommendations relating to medications Drugs commonly used in the perioperative environment Medication error case studies Error theory & communication strategies Medication on sterile fields: Practice implications including user-applied labelling of medicines, fluids and lines.
Speakers	Perioperative Clinical Nurse Consultants, Perioperative Educators and Consultant Anaesthetist
Who should attend?	This workshop is designed for RNs and ENs at all levels of experience, working in a range of perioperative settings (eg operating suite (anaesthetics, scrub/scout, recovery), day surgery procedural rooms, endoscopy, cardiac catheter labs, interventional radiology and anywhere else that nurses prepare medications on behalf of medical officers.
Prerequisites for attending	Current employment in perioperative and/or procedural settings. Recent review of all pre-reading (download pre-reading). Participants must bring a hard copy of the allocated HCCC case study to the workshop for the group work.
